A Strong Finish and New Beginnings (School Year Recap 2018-19)

The Collab is looking forward to a summer of transition and adventure. See below to learn more.

POWER Internship

This past spring, POWER Interns produced two new podcasts.  “Reflections” is an educational podcast about body positivity and self-love and how those concepts actually work in real life.  In “The Lockdown of Women’s Choice,” POWER Interns examine the state of abortion access and misinformation in America. Tune in here.

VOICES

VOICES recently produced “About Me,” a film where young people explored their personalities, identities and quirks!

POPPYN

This past spring, POPPYN completed their 27th episode “Philly Youth and the Arts” featuring local young artists and the schools and organizations who support them. In May, POPPYN presented at the International Conference on Student Voice. In June, they participated in “Youth Set the Stage” a creative showcase for youth organizations and young artists spearheaded by PhillyCAM at the Kimmel Center. POPPYN also participated in a reception event at the South African Embassy in Washington, DC, where they spoke about their international collaboration with I Am We Are and screened a segment from their 25th episode, “Finding Connection: Youth Across the Diaspora.”

Bittersweet Changes at the Collab

After seven wonderful years, our Manager of Media and Communications, Nuala Cabral, is departing the Collab to pursue creative new projects.  We are grateful for her vision and leadership and wish her well in her new chapter! See her message below.

“It has been an honor to oversee media programs, consent workshops and communications at this unique organization. I have learned so much about program management, youth development, university-community partnerships and storytelling for social change. I am grateful for the incredible staff, youth, families and community partners who have enriched my time here. My last day at the Collaborative will be July 31. I look forward to pursuing creative new projects with support from the Leeway Foundation and exploring what lays ahead in this city I have come to love — and beyond!”

POPPYN alum and Lead Facilitator Stormy Kelsey will step into the role of Coordinator of Media and Communications. Stormy recently earned her BA in Media Studies and Production from Temple University and brings her experience and enthusiasm to help the Collab deepen our commitment to media production, cross-cultural connections and social change! This past weekend, Stormy attended the Netroots Nation Conference in Philly, where she co-facilitated its Youth Caucus, screened POPPYN’s recent film about the school to prison pipeline and supervised POPPYN producers who reported on youth presence at the national gathering. Welcome to the Collab in your new role, Stormy!
